In August 2012, a car accident occurred at the intersection of Bronxwood Avenue and Williamsbridge Road in the Bronx. Tragically, a 70 year-old passenger in a 2000 Mitsubishi was killed and the driver of the same car, an 86 year-old male, was in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center. Another passenger in the Mitsubishi, a 76 year-old female was taken to the hospital in stable condition after the accident.
According to NYPD reports, the Mitsubishi was traveling south on Bronxwood Avenue around 9:30 p.m. and struck a northbound a 1999 Honda Odyssey as it attempted a lefthand turn onto Williamsbridge Road. The driver of the Honda was also taken to Jacobi Medical Center in stable condition.
According to reports by DNAinfo.com, neighbors near the scene said the corner is notorious for collisions. One resident indicated that in the 34 years he’s lived on the street, he’s seen dozens of car accidents at the intersection. Another resident reported that neighbors have contacted the city regarding the dangers of the intersection in the past.
However, a Department of Transportation spokesman reportedly told DNAinfo.com that the agency had not received any community requests about Williamsbridge Road and Bronxwood Avenue. The DOT representative added that there had been no fatalities since 2006, and no serious injuries of any kind between 2006 and 2010, the most recent year for which data is available.
